Alphorn workshop – the Alpine foghorn
The alphorn is regarded as a national symbol of Switzerland. It is thought that it was originally used by Alpine herdsmen to call their cows back to the stable. Did you know that the alphorn belongs to the family of brass wind instruments, even though it is made mainly out of wood? This is due solely to the technique with which it is played.
You too can learn the art of playing the alphorn under the expert tutelage of alphorn impresario Werner Erb. He is a leading authority in his field and has been performing – both as a soloist and together with his group – for more than 30 years. As an ambassador for the city of Chur, he can tell you everything about the history of the alphorn and instruct you in the correct playing technique. After your alphorn class on Chur’s local mountain Brambrüesch (scenic views included!), you can look back on the day’s events as you savour a delicious meal at a typical local inn.
